A friend of mine encountered an issue with the website at their workplace, for which they were ultimately responsible… it was mysteriously down!

“Who is your web guy?” I asked somewhat cheekily, expecting I’d know what the answer was. “Ummm, we don’t have one.”

Sure enough, I was right.

Getting it back online required navigating through an obtuse system of dashboards and DNS screens, even just to find the cPanel access that should be right there… I knew they had a WordPress site, but that dashboard gave little indication that there even was a website to manage yet.

In the end, somehow their DNS didn’t point to the appropriate IP address any longer. This is a fairly quick fix, but finding the issue took far longer than it should have.

In addition, nobody knew why it had happened.

Setups like this can be brittle - without the proper people and systems in place, it’s hard to have confidence that things won’t just collapse over the weekend?
